I’ve started doing yoga at home at the beginning of last year, but I quit after one or two months. Plenty of things got in the way, from knee pain to wedding plans. But I’ve started again this year and have been practicing daily for the past two months. And while I’m still one month away from creating a habit out of it, I’m trying to get another habit started: that of cleaning my mat. Although I don’t take it to classes or parks, I’m pretty sure germs know what’s up. And since I’m resting my forehead on this thing every now and then, it might as well feel clean!
What do I use for the yoga mat spray? Tea tree oil for once, which is known to disinfect and which is an antiseptic. Great for cleaning stuff! But it also smells pretty yucky to me, which is where peppermint oil comes in! Not only does it smell nice and fresh (and yoga is so much about feeling refreshed!) but it’s antimicrobial, too. So win-win! Mix the two in some water and voila! You can finally get around to cleaning your yoga mat. Here’s my recipe below, but feel free to mix and match by adding other essential oils or changing the proportions.
What you need:
- spray bottle
- water (preferably filtered)
- tea tree oil
- peppermint essential oil
Add 5 drops of tea tree oil and 10 drops of peppermint essential oil to every 100 ml water. Adjust according to the size of your bottle.
Spray your yoga mat all over, then wipe with a clean cloth. Allow to air dry before rolling.
Test the spray on a corner of your yoga mat first. Some essential oils might ruin some yoga mats!
