I hope you like the pin that I made for today, because I’m planning on giving it away to a random person that will comment on this post! However, for those who don’t win, here is how to make one for yourselves!
The project is simple, but it may take a while for beginners. It’s illustrated with loads of pics, to make sure everything is clear. What you need:
- large button
- safety pin
- needle and thread
Pick a large button that you don’t really want to use – maybe it’s not that pretty, maybe it’s old, maybe it’s broken. Mine is about 3.5 cm in diameter. From your chosen fabric, cut out a circle that’s a bit larger than the button. It doesn’t have to be a perfect circle, as the sides will never be seen or heard from ever again.
On the right side of the fabric, decide where you would like your beads and start sewing. I used black and white seed beads, as the fabric was already brightly colored. However, you can use a large variety of colors, sizes, you can use sequins, charms, or whatever crosses your mind.
After this, set the button in place, in the middle and on the wrong side of the fabric. What you’re gonna do now is wrap the button into fabric, by sewing all opposite ends together. Depending on your fabric, you might get some ugly-ish folds, which you can flatten by piercing through them and bringing them towards the middle of the button.
Don’t worry if it doesn’t look good on the back – we’ll cover it up soon. In order to do so, you’ll need another circle of fabric, this time the size of the button. It’s best to burn its ends, so that it doesn’t fall apart with time. You can use the same fabric, but I chose a striped, fun one.
We’ll add a safety-pin on this circle. Make sure you don’t sew it at the middle, but rather in the upper part of the circle – this will prevent the final pin to hang from the blouse unpleasantly.
Afterwards, you can attach this piece to the rest of the pin, by stitching the fabrics together, around the sides of the circle.
And this will be your brooch! Once again, if you like the one I’ve created, write a comment and it may be yours. Winner announced tomorrow.
Edit: Five people commented on this post and entered the giveaway. Here is what pure randomness decided:
