One of the first things I’ve had in Japan was onigiri. The triangular snacks are made of rice, stuffed with fish or meat or something sweet, and wrapped in seaweed. You can find them in every conbini for a little over 100 yen (so basically nothing) and they’re refreshing and filling at the same time. When I was in Tokyo in 2015 I had them almost every day, despite not being able to decipher the color code and getting random fillings every time. There are a few places in Berlin where you can have onigiri (Rice Up being closest to the conbini style in Japan) and I’ve sampled many of them. So many, in fact, that I felt the need to hold them in my arms at home. And thus the DIY onigiri cushion happened!

What you need:

  • craft paper and pencil
  • white felt or fleece
  • dark green or black felt or fleece
  • scissors
  • pins
  • sewing needle or sewing machine
  • white and dark green/black thread
  • stuffing
  • (optional) fabric glue

On a piece of craft paper, draw a triangle with rounded corners. Each side should be circa 43 cm. Cut it out and use it as a pattern for two pieces of white felt. For the dark green (seaweed) felt, you can either use a ready-cut A4 sheet or cut your own rectangle that’s roughly 21 x 30 cm.

Pin in place if necessary. Starting at the middle of a side, sew the pieces of white felt together, by hand or machine. Go all around until you are about 10 cm from the starting point, leaving a slit for now. Knot, then turn the cushion inside out.

Pin the dark felt in place on one side of the triangle so that the middle part covers the slit (see photo). Sew the short side of the rectangle to the cushion. Fill the cushion with plenty of stuffing, then stitch it closed. Fold the green felt over and stitch the other short side to the cushion.

If using fabric glue, simply fold the green felt over the visible stitch and glue all over. Finished!
